Actually, the film Coraline is based on the 2002 novel of the same name written by British Neil Gaiman.

However, the original story comes from an ancient, creepy account of his hometown: County Hampshire, in the United Kingdom.

It tells the story that outside of Hampshire lived an elderly woman with her newborn granddaughter.

Her son and daughter-in-law had lost their lives in a terrible fire and the little girl had miraculously survived.

Time passed and the girl was never seen going out to play.

Her grandmother kept her locked up and wouldn’t let anyone near the house, so they nicknamed her ‘The Bad Mother’.

So much mystery aroused the curiosity of several of the children of the village who, in a challenge of bravery, decided to wait until the night to enter the mansion and meet the mysterious girl.

But when they entered they found no indication that a girl was living there, no clothes, no toys, all they found was a crib.

Inside they found the body of a baby, almost completely burned, with buttons in the place where the eyes should go and stitches where the mouth would have previously been.

Then they knew the truth: the girl had never survived the fire, the only thing that the old woman had managed to recover was her body that she clung to as if she still had life.

The children ran away frightened from the house and told what they had seen to their parents. Finally the old woman was admitted to a psychiatric hospital where she remained until the day of her death.
