The passing of Pope Francis has caused global mourning. Honoring his wish, he will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, with his body lying in state at St. Peter’s Basilica for three days before the funeral.
World leaders, including President Macron, Donald Trump, and Argentina’s Javier Milei, are expected to attend. However, King Charles will not be present, as royal protocol forbids the sovereign from attending funerals. Instead, Prince William will represent him, just as Charles did for Queen Elizabeth at Pope John Paul II’s funeral.
King Charles, who recently met with Pope Francis and considered him a close friend, praised the pope’s compassion and commitment to unity and care for creation.
William’s attendance will mark his first time officially representing King Charles at a major international funeral, following a condolence visit to Kuwait in 2023.
