Doctor details Pope Francis’ heartbreaking final moments before death aged 88

Pope Francis was found unresponsive but breathing normally by his doctor on Monday, April 21, according to Corriere della Sera. Despite having his eyes open, he did not respond to calls or pain stimuli. “I understood there was nothing more to do. He was in a coma,” said Dr. Sergio Alfieri.

Francis, 88, had battled severe health issues in recent months, including pneumonia and kidney failure. After a five-week stay at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, he had returned to the Vatican in March to recover.

When alerted at 5:30 a.m. by the pope’s assistant, Alfieri arrived 20 minutes later but decided not to move Francis due to the risk. “The pope wanted to die at home,” the doctor added.

Francis passed away two hours after suffering a stroke. Cardinal Pietro Parolin and the papal staff said the rosary by his side, and Alfieri gave him a final farewell.

The pope will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 26. Per his wishes, his tombstone will not mention his 12-year papacy.
