HBO has confirmed the first six cast members for its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, with each season based on one of J.K. Rowling’s novels. The show is expected to premiere in 2026 and run for at least a decade.
Among the newly announced stars:
Nick Frost will play Hagrid, taking over from the late Robbie Coltrane.
John Lithgow, an Emmy and Golden Globe winner, will portray Dumbledore, a role previously played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. Lithgow admitted the offer “came as a total surprise.”
Janet McTeer will step into the role of Minerva McGonagall, following Dame Maggie Smith.
Paapa Essiedu is cast as Severus Snape.
Luke Thallon will portray Professor Quirinus Quirrell.
Paul Whitehouse will play caretaker Argus Filch.
The series was confirmed in 2023 and promises a faithful adaptation, with new actors also set to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
Fans responded enthusiastically online, with many praising the casting while noting the challenge of filling such iconic roles. The trio of leads has yet to be announced.
