Prince Harry has claimed that removing his police protection was a tactic to “trap” him and Meghan Markle in the UK. The Duke of Sussex said his “worst fears have been confirmed” during a legal case over the decision, which he believes deepened his rift with King Charles.
In 2020, Harry and Meghan’s taxpayer-funded security was revoked after they stepped back from royal duties and moved to the US. Harry said the removal of protection made it unsafe to return to the UK and felt like pressure to stay.
Speaking outside the Royal Courts of Justice, Harry revealed his hurt and frustration, saying he and Meghan were “trying to create a happy house” and improve family relations. But the lack of security, he said, made visiting Britain too dangerous, essentially painting “a target on their back.”
Harry took legal action against the UK government, insisting the decision was unfair. He said the case was more important than his lawsuits against the press, adding that secret court evidence had confirmed his fears. “People would be shocked by what’s being held back,” he told The Telegraph.
Even if he wins the case, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) may not be required to reinstate his protection. Harry vowed to continue fighting “injustice” regardless of the result.
