Two small single-engine planes collided midair on Wednesday morning at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona, a non-towered airfield without air traffic control. The crash involved a Lancair 360 MK II and a Cessna 172S, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The collision occurred around 8:30 a.m. while the planes were “upwind of runway 12,” according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The Cessna failed to land, while the Lancair crashed near runway 3, triggering a post-impact fire.
Each plane carried two passengers; two lives were lost in the same aircraft.
Marana Regional Airport Superintendent Galen Beem expressed condolences, calling the incident “unprecedented.” Authorities praised the swift response from local police and fire departments.
