The mysterious absence of bodies in Titanic’s wreckage

The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, claiming over 1,500 lives, yet very few bodies were ever recovered.

The wreck, discovered 70 years later, revealed a vast debris field but no human remains—only shoes and personal items. Out of 337 recovered bodies, 119 were buried at sea, while 209 were taken to Halifax.

Experts believe the extreme ocean depth (over 12,000 feet), near-freezing temperatures, and marine life caused the bodies to decompose completely, leaving only non-biodegradable items behind.

Why Titanic Victims’ Bones Vanished

Deep-sea explorer Robert Ballard explains that at depths below 3,000 feet, seawater dissolves bones due to its low calcium carbonate levels.

Unlike the Black Sea, where bodies can mummify, the Titanic wreck lies too deep for bones to survive. Once marine life consumes soft tissue, bones gradually dissolve, leaving no trace.
