Hospice Nurse Helps Dying Patients Grant Their Final Wishes

The thought of growing old and being unable to care for oneself can be daunting. Many fear losing their independence and relying on hospice care. This fear reminded one person of Maria, a music teacher who spent her final days in a care home. Maria’s former student, Joshua Woodard, worked at the care home and, knowing her time was limited, sang her favorite hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” fulfilling her last wish.

Joshua had known Maria since childhood, and his act of kindness reflected the deep bond between them. Maria’s story is a testament to the compassion hospice workers bring to their roles, offering peace in a person’s final days.

Another hospice worker, Annamarie Berg, shared a similar story about her patient, Irene Rosipajla. Although Irene didn’t talk much, Annamarie connected with her through the song “Goodnight, Irene.” As Irene’s condition worsened, Annamarie brought her guitar and sang the song, creating a special moment that touched Irene and her family deeply.

Irene’s daughter-in-law, Michelle Naypauer, praised Annamarie’s kindness, recalling how she helped set up a FaceTime call so Irene could attend her son’s wedding virtually. Annamarie’s song was a heartfelt farewell, and Irene passed away surrounded by her loved ones.
