Heartbreaking footage has resurfaced of orca trainer Alexis Martinez, who was tragically killed by a killer whale at Tenerife’s Loro Parque.
Martinez, an experienced trainer, worked closely with the apex predators. On the day of the incident, he was paired with Keto, a 6,600-pound male orca, at the park’s Orca Ocean attraction. Despite Keto appearing to be in a good mood, the orca failed to perform several stunts during their session.
As Martinez floated near the surface, Keto positioned himself between the trainer and the stage, before pushing Martinez to the bottom of the pool. Witnesses described how the orca “violently played with his body” underwater. Martinez did not survive the attack.
Following the incident, SeaWorld temporarily suspended in-water interactions with orcas at its parks. Martinez’s death came shortly before another fatal incident involving a SeaWorld trainer, Dawn Brancheau, who was killed by the orca Tilikum in Orlando.
The tragedy left a lasting impact on the world of marine parks and orca training.
