Archaeologists have obtained new and detailed evidence on how Ancient Rome embalmed its dead. They were astonished after opening a 2,000-year-old sarcophagus in the historic “Tomb of Cerberus” in Naples. Inside, scientists discovered an ancient mummy that had remarkably preserved over millennia, according to the Daily Mail.

The find is considered “unprecedented.” It is noted that the remains were essentially preserved using plant-based creams (chenopodium and wormwood) applied to the bodies before sealing them in the chamber.

“One of the bodies was found covered with a shroud, surrounded by funerary artifacts… The special care taken with the deceased and the timeline of the discovered items suggest that this person may have been the founder of the family for whom the mausoleum was built,” the publication states.
