Dogs greet and learn about the world using their powerful noses, which contain around 220 million scent receptors — far more than humans. One behavior that often makes humans uncomfortable is when dogs sniff people’s crotches. But to a dog, it’s completely natural.
Why do they do it?
The crotch has apocrine sweat glands that produce strong, unique scents. This area is also conveniently at nose-level for medium to large dogs, making it an ideal spot for them to gather personal scent information.
How to stop it:
If your dog’s curiosity becomes awkward during greetings, don’t scold them — redirect their attention instead. Try:
-
Snuffle mats or nosework games
-
Puzzle toys
-
“Sit” or “high-five” training when guests arrive
Veterinarian Jennifer Sperry recommends using positive reinforcement to guide your dog to more polite behaviors. Teach them new tricks that replace the sniffing urge.
Remember: Your dog’s not being rude — they’re just being a dog. But with gentle guidance, you can make greetings comfortable for everyone.
