Richard Zachariah dies just four months after ABC legend was struck by a personal tragedy

TV presenter and journalist Richard Zachariah has died at age 80, just four months after the passing of his former partner, fashion icon and Australia’s first supermodel Maggie Tabberer, who died in December at 87.

Zachariah and Tabberer were one of Sydney’s most glamorous couples in the 1980s and 1990s, co-hosting ABC’s The Home Show. Despite criticism for featuring luxurious homes, the show was a ratings hit. Zachariah once defended it, saying viewers appreciated the dream of aspirational living.

Their relationship and show ended after ten years, with Zachariah noting public backlash, saying breaking up with Maggie was like “breaking up with the Queen Mother.”

He later left the celebrity scene for a quieter life in South Australia with his partner Sarah. A passionate racing enthusiast, Zachariah also authored several books, including Zachariah, chronicling his life with Maggie, and The Vanished Land, about fading rural dynasties in Victoria.
