More than 100 people died after the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed around 1 a.m. on April 8. Among the victims were former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, as well as merengue performer Rubby Pérez, who was on stage when the collapse occurred.
Emergency officials reported at least 113 confirmed deaths, with 33 victims still unidentified. Dotel initially survived the collapse but died en route to the hospital. Another victim, Nelsy Cruz, governor of Monte Cristi and relative of MLB star Nelson Cruz, was also killed.
155 people were hospitalized, and rescue operations are ongoing. Authorities are still unsure what caused the collapse. President Luis Abinade declared three days of mourning and praised the efforts of 22 public institutions involved in the rescue.
“Our prayers are with the affected families,” Abinade said.
