Meghan Markle says she has changed her famous last name

Meghan Markle has made a bold change—she now goes by “Meghan Sussex.” This shift aligns her surname with her husband, Prince Harry, and their children, Archie and Lilibet.

She revealed the change on her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, correcting Mindy Kaling by saying, “It’s Sussex now. I share my name with my children, and it means so much to me.” She echoed this sentiment in an interview with People, calling the Sussex name “part of our love story.”

While informally adopting “Sussex,” Meghan’s choice has sparked criticism. Some argue her surname should be “Mountbatten-Windsor,” as “Sussex” is a courtesy title, not a legal last name. Even her estranged father, Thomas Markle, expressed disappointment, claiming his late mother would be upset by Meghan distancing herself from the Markle name.

Despite controversy, royal experts confirm using titles as surnames is common. Prince Harry once used “Wales” in the military, and their children are officially “of Sussex.” However, media outlets continue referring to Meghan as “Markle,” ensuring the debate over her name isn’t over yet.
