New study reveals exactly how cannabis can impact your brain

A recent study reveals how cannabis use can reduce brain connectivity, particularly in young adults at risk of psychosis.

McGill University researchers found that cannabis worsens synaptic density loss—the connections between neurons—leading to social withdrawal and lack of motivation. Using advanced brain scanning, they studied 49 participants aged 16-30, including those with psychotic symptoms.

Dr. Romina Mizrahi explained that while not all cannabis users develop psychosis, the drug disrupts brain development by interfering with synapse pruning.

The study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, suggests that targeting synaptic density could improve treatments for psychosis, focusing on social function and quality of life. Researchers now aim to determine whether these brain changes predict psychosis, allowing for earlier intervention.
