Why stranded astronauts will not receive any overtime benefits despite 8-day trip turning into 9 months

The two NASA astronauts stranded on the ISS won’t be getting a massive payout for their extended stay, despite the inconvenience.

Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams were meant to stay for just eight days, but spacecraft malfunctions kept them in orbit for nine months. They finally returned to Earth on March 18, landing in Florida with the SpaceX Crew Dragon.

Despite the unusual circumstances, former astronaut Cady Coleman explained they’ll receive only their standard salaries, with a small incidental allowance—around $1,148 each. However, as GS-15 ranked astronauts, their base salaries range from $125,133 to $162,672 per year, meaning their extended stay earned them an additional $93,850 to $122,004.
