Former White House doctor Dr. Stephanie Psaki has warned that Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on travel, foreign assistance, and CDC communications could allow deadly diseases like the Marburg virus to enter the U.S. This pause includes halting CDC collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), limiting critical global health efforts.
Dr. Psaki, also a former Biden advisor, highlighted the current Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania, where eight of nine infected individuals have died. With no vaccine or treatment, she emphasized that the U.S. must act at the outbreak’s source to prevent the virus, which spreads via bodily fluids and causes severe bleeding, from reaching American soil.
Previously, CDC and WHO coordination helped contain outbreaks like Ebola. Dr. Psaki warned that severing ties with organizations like WHO undermines the U.S.’s ability to respond to new pathogens, as it did with COVID-19. She urged the administration to follow the established global health strategy and restore efforts to monitor and stop diseases abroad.
Trump’s executive orders, including withdrawing from WHO and blocking new NIH research, risk leaving the U.S. isolated from global disease warning systems. Dr. Psaki called for rebuilding health security efforts to protect Americans and contain future outbreaks effectively.
