President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” sparking criticism from Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the name change only applies to the American continental shelf, stating, “For us and the world, it remains the Gulf of Mexico.”

The order highlighted the Gulf’s role in fishing, oil production, and international trade, underscoring its importance to America’s economy. However, Sheinbaum sarcastically suggested renaming North America as “América Mexicana” in response.

Renaming the Gulf could face significant diplomatic hurdles, given its shared territorial waters with Mexico and Cuba under international agreements.
