What happened to this 70s TV icon

Debra Winger, renowned for her role in An Officer and a Gentleman, remains an icon in the film industry even at 69. Her acting career has been shaped by remarkable talent and resilience.

At 18, Winger faced a life-threatening accident that left her partially paralyzed and blind for ten months. Miraculously recovering, she pursued acting, debuting in Slumber Party ‘57 (1976) and playing Drusilla in Wonder Woman.

Her breakthrough came in the 1980s with iconic roles in Urban Cowboy (1980), An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), and Terms of Endearment (1983). However, rumors surrounded her relationships with co-stars like Richard Gere and Shirley MacLaine. While on-screen chemistry thrived, off-screen tensions persisted, with Winger allegedly calling Gere “a brick wall” and clashing with MacLaine on set. Despite rumors, Winger cited her Hollywood hiatus as a personal choice, driven by a desire for greater challenges.

After Forget Paris (1995), she stepped back, married actor Arliss Howard, and focused on family. She returned in Big Bad Love (2001), directed by her husband, and starred in Rachel Getting Married (2008), The Lovers (2017), and Kajillionaire (2020).

Winger remains a celebrated figure, dismissing Hollywood’s mystique while continuing to leave her mark on cinema.
