Around 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, a car plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, resulting in at least ten fatalities and numerous injuries.
Police described the incident as a mass casualty event in the French Quarter, likely crowded with New Year’s Eve revelers. Witnesses reported a truck crashing through a barricade and into the crowd before the driver exited and brandished a weapon. Gunfire was also heard in the area.
Jim and Nicole Mowrer, nearby at the time, recounted hearing shots after the crash. “We saw police running toward the gunfire. Once it stopped, we came out and saw several people injured,” they told CBS News.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry condemned the act on social media, urging prayers for victims and first responders while advising the public to avoid the area.
Authorities confirmed at least ten deaths and thirty injuries. Several victims were treated on-site or transported to nearby hospitals, including University Medical Center and Touro Hospital. Investigations are ongoing as officials work to determine the full scope of the tragedy.
