179 passengers ‘presumed’ dead in South Korea plane crash

A devastating plane crash at South Korea’s Muan International Airport claimed at least 122 lives, with authorities fearing the death toll could rise to 179. A Jeju Air flight carrying 181 passengers, including six crew, caught fire during landing due to suspected landing gear issues.

The twin-engine aircraft, returning from Bangkok, veered off the runway, collided with a fence, and exploded into flames after hitting a wall. Local media footage captured the plane skidding in flames as debris scattered. Only two people—a passenger and a crew member—were rescued from the wreckage.

Most passengers were South Korean, along with two Thai nationals. Rescue operations continue as authorities work to recover those trapped in the wreckage. South Korea’s acting President Choi Sung-mok ordered an emergency response and “all-out rescue efforts.”

The crash, one of South Korea’s deadliest aviation accidents in years, has prompted investigations to determine its exact cause.
