Your Fingertips May Change Color During The Chilly Winter Months Due To A Common Condition

When temperatures drop, millions experience color changes in their extremities, often from typical tones to white or red. This phenomenon, known as Raynaud’s disease or Raynaud’s phenomenon, occurs when blood flow to the fingers and toes is disrupted, typically in cold conditions.

Unlike mild cold sensitivity, Raynaud’s causes noticeable temperature and color shifts in the hands and feet. According to Dr. Melisa Lai Becker, affected individuals often have ice-cold, white hands even in moderate cold.

The NHS explains that Raynaud’s impacts blood circulation, with symptoms triggered by cold, stress, or anxiety. Signs include color changes, pins and needles, numbness, and discomfort in extremities. Other areas, like the nose, ears, lips, and nipples, can also be affected.

Symptoms can appear suddenly or gradually and vary in intensity. If pain interferes with daily activities, it’s essential to consult a doctor. Raynaud’s may result from another medical condition or certain medications.

The condition is most common in women and often begins in adolescence, affecting up to 20% of adults globally.
