Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a major cause of disability, affecting people of all ages. Women are particularly at risk, with stroke being their third leading cause of death, according to the American Stroke Association.
Strokes, often called brain attacks, occur in two forms: ischemic (caused by blocked blood flow to the brain) and hemorrhagic (caused by a ruptured blood vessel). Both can result in brain damage, disability, or death. Recognizing symptoms quickly and calling 911 is critical.
Signs of a Stroke
The CDC highlights five sudden warning signs:
- Numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side.
- Confusion or difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
- Vision problems in one or both eyes.
- Trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of coordination.
- Severe headache with no known cause.
If these symptoms occur, seek immediate medical help.
Understanding stroke risks and taking preventive steps are essential for reducing your chances of having one.
