Despite advances in technology and research, the human body remains a mystery in many ways due to its complexity. Recent studies reveal that humans may have a subconscious ability to sense approaching death. As the body decays, it emits putrescine, a pungent odor associated with decomposition.
Scientists Arnaud Wisman and Ilan Shira suggest that humans, like animals, can detect this odor and react instinctively. In experiments, they observed that exposure to putrescine causes people to move away, similar to animals’ fight-or-flight response when sensing danger.
While some researchers are skeptical, they acknowledge that odors can heighten environmental awareness. Unlike pheromones, which trigger attraction, putrescine incites avoidance and hostility. Although humans are typically unaware of this odor, it still elicits subconscious reactions linked to survival.
